HEBREW DAY SCHOOL OF ANN ARBOR

Scope of Responsibilities: The Hebrew Day School of Ann Arbor is seeking a Head of School who must represent, embody, and articulate the school’s mission of excellence in Jewish and secular education. Ideally, he or she would be a professional educator, a capable administrator, a good communicator, and a leader who shows personal passion for our school. Our HOS will report to the Board of Trustees. The Board at present has nine members. Of those, three are parents in the school and four are alumni parents. The HOS is the Chief Executive Officer of the school and as such has full authority over operational decisions within the school, including decisions about the school’s other personnel. At present, the school employs a full-time office manager, a full-time business, a part time recruiting specialist, a part time development specialist and has 10, teachers on staff. The school expects to have the resources to enable the new HOS to hire additional professional support (up to the increment of one full-time employee. This additional support could be administrative or educational, depending on what would work best for the new HOS.

School and Community: The Hebrew Day School is freestanding and is not affiliated with any particular synagogue. It is physically located in a wing of Ann Arbor’s Jewish Community Center, as are many other local Jewish institutions. Ann Arbor, a college community is heavily shaped by the University of Michigan. The University is a rich community resource, and our school aims to deliver the very best elementary education available. Our school serves the whole Jewish community and considers pluralism to be an important value.

Scope of Responsibilities: The ideal candidate for our Head of School position will demonstrate an exceptional ability to communicate within the school community and to represent the school in the wider community; commitment to Judaism and ability to serve as a Jewish role model; love of teaching and learning, with a thorough grasp of best educational practices; a high degree of professionalism; strategic thinking and willingness to prioritize and delegate, to make tough decisions when necessary and to follow through on decisions; experience and comfort with fundraising, and with financial and personnel management; a record of successful leadership, preferably in a Jewish Day School or other educational setting; and strong support for teachers. Minimum credentials include a graduate degree in education and 5-10 years experience.

School and Community: Ezra Academy has a long tradition of outstanding secular and Judaic education, and offers a warm, enriching Jewish community for students, families, and staff. While most Ezra students come from Conservative families, many are Reform, Orthodox, or unaffiliated; the school community is also culturally and socioeconomically diverse.
